Bigotry?
First, there are several individuals and groups who are leveling the charge of "bigotry" against Chick-fil-A and calling for cities to deny the company business licenses to operate.
What is bigotry? As we often do, let's turn to Merriam-Webster for a definition:
big·ot·ry
1: the state of mind of a bigot
2: acts or beliefs characteristic of a bigot
OK... that wasn't particularly helpful. What's a bigot?
big·ot
: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance
While it is entirely possible that some people are treating gays with "hatred and intolerance", neither Chick-fil-A, the Scouts, nor the cake shop did so.
On the contrary, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared that "Chick-fil-A's values are not Chicago values." and pledged to keep the company from obtaining business licenses to open additional stores. Boston mayor Thomas Menino echoed his sentiment and vowed to block the store from opening in his city.
Who exactly is being intolerant?
Chick-fil-A, who continues to serve and employ gays?
Or are those who support the homosexual agenda being intolerant and hateful?
