The Hebrew Words
There are two words that make up the name of this week's Torah portion:
First use in Scripture
אַחֲרֵי [acharei - Strong's #310] properly means "the hind part" or "after". It is used 636 times in 599 verses in the Tanakh.
The first place acharei is found in Scripture is in Genesis 5.
Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. (Genesis 5:4)
מוֹת [mot - Strong's #4194] means "death" and is used 164 times in 159 verses in the Tanakh.
The first instance of this word is in Genesis 21 when Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away.
Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, "Do not let me see the boy die." And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept. (Genesis 21:16)
The first time the phrase acharei mot is used as a phrase in Scripture is in Genesis 25.
It came about after the death of Abraham, that G-d blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi. (Genesis 25:11)
Last use in Scripture
The last time acharei mot is used as a phrase in Scripture is in Psalm 49.
For when he dies he will carry nothing away; His glory will not descend after him. (Psalm 49:17)
